Durante a época da depressão, Bertha Thompson viu seu pai ser forçado em pilotar um avião em condições precárias e morrer em um acidente. Mais tarde ela liga a "Big" Bill Shelley, um líder sindical, mas na "caça as bruxas" que caracterizou a época do macartismo ele era considerado um comunista.
