Durante anos um sonho fez com que Brandon Lang se dedicasse ao futebol americano, jogando das ligas infantis até os times universitários.
Um problema no joelho fez com que abandonasse temporariamente o esporte, mas ele ainda acreditava que poderia ser convocado para jogar em um dos times profissionais.
Durante anos Brandon enviou cartas para os mais diversos olheiros, mas sempre recebias negativas como resposta.
Enquanto isso, para se sustentar, trabalhava em um cubículo, atendendo ligações.
Brandon começa a perder a esperança de realizar seu sonho, até que recebe uma carta de Walter Abrams, responsável pelo maior serviço de esportes dos Estados Unidos.
Walter não quer Brandon jogando mas acredita que ele possui habilidade para detectar os vencedores das partidas, o que o tornaria um trunfo e tanto no ramo das apostas.
Walter acredita tanto em Brandon que lhe faz uma proposta irrecusável: que ele escolha o valor do contra-cheque e se mude para Nova York.
Brandon aceita a proposta e, a partir de então, passa a ser o "menino de ouro" dos negócios de Walter.

Londres, 1874. Henry Jekyll é um dedicado pesquisador que há 6 anos está casado com Kitty, mas lhe dá pouca atenção.
Com isso ela se apaixonou por Paul Allen, o maior amigo de Jekyll.
Paralelamente Henry desenvolve uma fórmula que faz vir à tona o lado negro de cada ser e, ao aplicar em si esta droga, Jekyll se altera não só psicologicamente como fisicamente.
Logo ele está na Sphinx, uma casa noturna cara mas de má reputação.
Lá encontra Kitty e Paul, que conversam com ele. Logo Jekyll está dançando com Kitty, que não imagina que este desconhecido que diz se chamar Edward Hyde é o seu marido, que ela tanto evita. Este encontro marca o início de várias tragédias.
