Born in Zanzibar to Indian parents and later raised in India, Mercury and his "Queen" bandmates went on to sell albums in
unit totals that rival the Beatles. His remarkable four octave singing range was a key ingredient in the band's success.
Mercury famously died of AIDS in late 1991, less than 24 hours after a public admission he had contracted the disease.
