Cantor, compositor, produtor e actor, de seu nome verdadeiro David Robert Jones, nascido em 1947, em Londres, é senhor de um vasto currículo artístico, revelador das suas várias e extremadas facetas. Na música, o álbum The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust (1972) constitui o marco da época Glam Rock de Bowie, tendo posteriormente obtido sucesso com outros temas como "Diamond Dogs" (1974), "Ashes to Ashes" (1980), "Let's Dance" (1983) e "This is not America" (1985).
No cinema, marcou presença em The Man who Fell to Earth (1975), Just a Gigolo (1979) e Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (Feliz Natal, Mr. Lawrence , 1983), entre outros filmes. Actuou também na peça The Elephant Man (1980), na Broadway, e em Baal (1981), de Bertolt Brecht. Em 1983, David Bowie divulgou a sua digressão mundial através de E-Mail e, em 1997, continuando na vanguarda das novas tecnologias, lançou na net o single "Telling Lies". A sua polivalência artística, desde a forma de estar em palco até às suas frequentes alterações de visual, trouxe-lhe o epíteto de "camaleão".
