The Platters foi um famoso grupo vocal da Era do Rock and Roll.
Formado em Los Angeles, 1953, chegou a vender mais de 53 milhões de discos e está, desde 1990, no Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
Originalmente formado por Tony Williams, David Lynch, Alex Hodge, o grupo passou por várias alterações na sua formação.
Entre seus sucessos, destacam-se "Only You", "My Prayer", "The Great Pretender", "You've Got The Magic Touch", "You'll Never Know", entre outros.
Tony Williams saiu do grupo em 1961 e foi substituído por Sonny Turner. Zola Taylor também saiu e foi substituída por Sandra Dawn. Paul Robi foi substituído por Nate Nelson em 1966.
David Lynch e Paul Robi morreram de cancro em 1981 e 1989 respectivamente. Buck Ram morreu aos 83 anos, em 1991, e Tony Williams, em 1992.
Os The Platters continuam em actividade até hoje.
Tommy Smiley juntou-se ao Platters em 1978 e foi o responsável pela imortalização da música "Only You". O vocalista faleceu em 4 de março de 2006, aos 59 anos, no México, vítima de uma paragem cardíaca decorrente de uma crise de asma.
