Rainbow foi uma banda de rock formada pelo o fundador do Deep Purple, guitarrista Ritchie Blackmore em 1975. Além de Blackmore, a banda inicialmente consistia em antigos membros da banda Elf: o vocalista Ronnie James Dio, o teclista Mickey Lee Soule, o baixista Craig Gruber e o baterista Gary Driscoll. Ao passar dos anos, a banda passou por muitas mudanças.
A banda separa-se em 1984 quando Ritchie Blackmore volta aos Deep Purple. Em 1990 Joe Lynn Turner também se junta aos Deep Purple para lançar o disco Slaves and Masters, mas deixa a banda em seguida. Em 1995, Blackmore retorna aos Rainbow e lança o disco Stranger in Us All. A banda acaba e Blackmore forma o seu grupo de música renascentista, os Blackmore's Night, com Candice Night nos vocais, permanecendo assim até hoje. Ronnie James Dio passou pelos Black Sabbath, que o consagrou ainda mais além, revitalizando e dando uma nova cara aos Sabbath. Após isso seguiu num uma carreira a solo de sucesso, e recentemente, juntou-se novamente aos Black Sabbath, porém com o nome de Heaven and Hell.
